    Eligilability Criteria

    The following is a guideline to be eligible for sponsorship.

    • Applicant must be a registered Treaty Six First Nations Member of Cold Lake First Nations # 149, 149A and 149B with a residency of no less than 6 months
    • Applicants must be 19 years old (to obtain access to labour market programs) and out of school for a period of one year.
    • Applicants may be employed or unemployed.
      • a) Employed Applicants must provide: A letter of approval and some financial support by their place of employment, and b) Must be actively seeking employment.

    • Bill C-31 Applicants must apply to the Treaty Six Employment and training office in St. Paul, Alberta.
    • Urban Applicants who are from Cold Lake First Nations must apply to the Oteenow Employment and training office in Edmonton, Alberta.
    • Social development applicants are applicable to cost sharing their sponsorship with the Human resources and Social services departments.
    • Applicants must submit a sponsorship application two weeks prior to commencement of training program or employment activity. Last minute applications will not be accepted.
    • Each Treaty Six Nations member is only eligible for a maximum of 52 weeks.

    A Cold Lake First Nations sponsored student who experiences financial shortfalls are eligible to receive assistance from another agency; however, he/she must be cautious of obtaining dual sponsorship and this may lead to legal ramifications. The Cold Lake First Nations, Human Resources Department does not encourage and is not responsible for student loans.

    IF I HAVE RECEIVED SPONSORSHIP BEFORE, CAN I STILL APPLY?

    If you have previously attended and/or previously received sponsorship from a Canadian employment centre, Human Resources Centre, the Expired Pathways initiative, Pre-Vocational Training Funds or other governmental agencies to attend a program and/or training initiative, you may qualify again if:

    • You successfully completed the program and/or training and require additional support to achieve or enhance employability (up to a maximum of 52 weeks)
    • As a client, you can demonstrate how proposed training will improve their level of education and/or employability
    • If, the client was not successful at completion and supporting documentation reveals why they could not complete; the client will be subject to cover all costs spent on his/her funding that must be paid back to the Human Resources department.
    • If a clients outstanding debt remains, the Human Resources department will not proceed with further funding/sponsorship from the date of termination or withdrawal. To be considered for further funding, the client must provide proper documentation indicating that the issue for termination/withdrawal has been dealt with, attend career counseling sessions, provide a one page action plan on long term goals, and provide an indication that he/she is prepared to move forward.

    SPONSORSHIP PRE-REQUISITES

    1. Fill out a sponsorship application form. Applications must be in two weeks prior to the start date of the program/training.
    2. Attend a service needs determination interview
    3. Provide official acceptance letter from a training program/institution or provide employment support letter describing the applicants need (i.e. personal protective equipment, safety certification etc)
    4. Provide a budget of expenses i.e. tuition, books, supplies, relocation assistance, quote for personal protective equipment etc.
    5. Provide a career plan- one page report, detailed plan of action.
    6. Photocopy of Identification: Status card, drivers license, Alberta Health Care card etc.
    7. Provide proof of residency- if client has been relocating on and off reserve.
      • Please note that failure to submit all documentation may result in the delay or denial of the sponsorship application process.
      • Any continuing sponsorship will be dependant upon academic performance and past record with the Human Resources department.
      • All registration fees are the responsibility of the individual. Registration fees can be reimbursed upon acceptance and approval of the training program.

    SPONSORSHIP CONDITIONS

    • Processing of any applications will not take place until all necessary documentation is completed and provided to the Human Resources department. All documentation required is the sole responsibility of the applicant. Do not approach the Human Resources Department until all documentation is collected.
    • Applicants must apply to training institutions that offer their specific training program at the nearest location to Cold Lake First Nations
    • Any false documentation or information might result in the applicants immediate denial of sponsorship and may prevent the applicant from receiving future sponsorship.
    • The applicant must settle any outstanding debts to any education and/or training institution such as: Library fines, parking fines or any other debts.
