Media Release Posts: Call for Candidates: Advisory Groups and Field visits
Cold Lake First Nations’ Lands and Resources Department is seeking enthusiastic and knowledgeable CLFN members who care about their Community, the Land, and Treaty and Indigenous rights to sit on our advisory committees and/or who are interested in performing field visits and site inspections. Right now, LRD has four opportunities for Cold Lake First Nation members to support the work of the Land and Resourced Department:
- Caribou and Land Protection Working Group
- Access and Industry Engagement Committee.
- Cultural Heritage Protection Committee
- Field visit and inspection work
Advisory Groups:
Advisory groups provide advice, input and recommendations on matters related to the Lands and Resources Department’s mandate and operations.
- The Caribou and Land Protection Working Group includes members of staff and technicians and has up to six seats dedicated to community members. The Caribou and Land Protection Committee collaborates with external technical experts and department staff to gain a deeper understanding of the issues and provide guidance on the path forward for CLFN. The goal is to create a forum for knowledge exchange and discussion in a constructive and non-political environment. The Caribou and Land Protection Working Group meets at least once a month but there may be additional meetings as needed. The term of the appointment is one year. Participation is voluntary and honoraria will be provided to participants who are not Council or staff/technicians.
- The Access and Industry Engagement Committee includes representatives from staff and technicians and has up to six seats designated for community members. The Access Committee considers the potential impacts of industry development on CLFN’s homelands and the community, and how to address those impacts. The Access Committee meets at least once a month, but members may also participate in additional meetings as needed. The term of the appointment is one year. Participation is voluntary and an honorarium will be provided to participants who are not Council or staff/technicians. An Oath of Confidentiality is required.
- The Cultural Heritage Protection Committee includes members of staff and technicians and has up to six seats dedicated to community members. The Cultural Heritage Protection Committee currently comprises of the Archives Committee members and would also work on developing a cultural heritage policy, oversee and provide recommendations on Indigenous Knowledge requests and research relationships. This committee meets at least 8-10 times per year but there may be additional meetings as needed. The term of the appointment is one year. Participation is voluntary and honoraria will be provided to participants who are not Council or staff/technicians.
Field Visits and Inspections:
The Land and Resources Department regularly makes field visits and inspections to various industrial sites to support the Consultation office. Information collected during field visits and inspections provide advice, input and recommendations to the Land and Resourced Department.
Responsibilities
All Advisory Group members will do their best to:
- Communicate respectfully, openly and honestly;
- Always have the best interests of CLFN (now and future generations) in mind;
- Attend meetings punctually, sending regrets in advance for any necessary absence;
- Prepare for meetings by pre-reading the agenda, documents and emails provided before the meeting;
- Participate fully in meetings by giving their full attention, considering with respect all opinions offered, and communicating concisely, and contributing positively to the discussion; and,
- Ensure any information identified as sensitive or confidential is treated and maintained as such.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and experience related to any of these areas: hunting, berry picking, fishing, etc.; CLFN history, language, and culture; treaty and Indigenous rights; environment; oil and gas development; employment/contracting barriers/issues; issues important to CLFN citizens.
Only Cold Lake First Nations members will be considered for appointment to the LRD Advisory Groups or will have the opportunity to perform field visits and inspections.
