Please be advised that Chief and Council has learned of concerning groundwater contamination in our traditional lands.
The groundwater contamination is present in the following locations:
– Section 23 – Township 66 – Range 3 – W4M
– Section 33 – Township 64 – Range 3 – W4M
– Sections 5 and 8 – Township 65 – Range 3 – W4M
– Section 12 – Township 65 – Range 4 – W4M
– Sections 16 and 21 – Township 65 – Range 4 – W4M
We have learned that the contamination has been present for many years and was caused by industrial activity.
At this point, CLFN does not have evidence of risks to human or wildlife health. CLFN staff are compiling and analyzing all available information and are undertaking water sampling to determine whether contaminants are also present in surface waters in or near to those locations.
As stewards of the Dene Ni Nene, our goals are to ensure this issue is dealt with effectively, that our lands and waters be returned to pristine condition, and that those responsible are held accountable.
We will host a community meeting on this issue once more information becomes available.
