Cold Lake First Nations is reminding all residents of their responsibilities under the Animal Control Bylaw as enforcement measures take effect beginning June 1, 2026.
The decision follows ongoing concerns raised by community members, staff, and visitors regarding dogs running at large throughout the community. Reports have highlighted safety concerns in residential areas, around schools, Administration buildings, local businesses, Commercial Lands, and English Bay. These concerns affect not only residents, but also children, Elders, employees, and visitors to Cold Lake First Nations.
To help maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone, Chief and Council are asking all residents to ensure they are complying with the Cold Lake First Nations Animal Control Bylaw.
Under the bylaw:
- A maximum of four (4) domestic animals is permitted per dwelling.
- Dogs must remain under the owner’s control at all times.
- Dogs are not permitted to run at large within the community.
Beginning June 1, 2026, enforcement action will be implemented throughout Cold Lake First Nations. Residents are encouraged to take immediate steps to ensure their animals are properly secured and that their households comply with the bylaw requirements.
Failure to comply may result in enforcement measures, including the seizure and impoundment of animals as permitted under the bylaw.
Chief and Council thank all residents for their cooperation and commitment to community safety. By working together, we can help create a safer environment for our families, neighbours, and visitors while promoting responsible pet ownership throughout Cold Lake First Nations.
