COLD LAKE FIRST NATIONS, AB — May 12, 2026 — The coordinated search for Whyette Scanie remains ongoing, with search efforts now transitioning into an aerial phase following extensive water-based operations.
Since the search began, river conditions have significantly worsened, with water levels rising approximately eight feet. Swift currents, unstable shorelines, submerged hazards, and rapidly changing water conditions have created an extremely dangerous environment for both responders and the public.
Cold Lake First Nations is strongly urging community members and the general public not to attempt independent search efforts. The river and surrounding area remain highly hazardous, and unauthorized access could place additional lives at risk while impacting ongoing emergency response operations.
The search continues through a coordinated, multi-agency response involving specialized emergency teams and support organizations from across northeastern Alberta. Resources involved in the operation include:
- Cold Lake Search & Rescue Team
- Bonnyville Search & Rescue Team & Marine Unit
- St. Paul Search & Rescue Team & Marine Unit
- Fort McMurray Search & Rescue Team & Marine Unit
- Alberta Search & Rescue Specialized Dive Team
- Fire & Flood Emergency Services
- Vortex Helicopters
- City of Cold Lake RCMP
- City of Cold Lake Fire Department
- Cold Lake First Nations Emergency Management
- Cold Lake First Nations Health Department
- Cold Lake First Nations Mental Health Supports
- Hotel Dene, for accommodations and meals supporting emergency responders
Cold Lake First Nations extends sincere gratitude to every responder, volunteer, and partner organization who continue to support this difficult and emotionally challenging operation.
Our thoughts remain with Whyette’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
The search will continue until Whyette is brought home.
For public safety, residents are asked to avoid the search area and allow trained emergency personnel to carry out their work safely and effectively.
